What’s New for 2023?
With a condensed lineup and two limited-edition variants for 2023, the Kia Stinger commemorates its fifth revolution around the sun. Kia has also declared that 2023 will be the last year that its sports sedan is produced. There are now only GT-Line and GT2 models available instead of the GT-Line, GT1, and GT2 from last year. Kia also offers special edition versions of the Apex and Grand Tourer. For the Stinger GT-Line only, Apex features Brembo brakes, black exhaust tips, fenders, and mirrors.
In addition to having black exhaust tips, fenders, and mirrors, the Grand Tourer, which is only offered for the Stinger GT2, also has a customized inside with black suede seat inserts, suede dashboard trim, and sporty red stitching for the seats and instrument panel. A Tribute Edition, with a global production restriction of 1000 units, honors the Stinger’s final year with an Ascot Green paint finish as standard and an optional Moonscape matte grey paint color. The Stinger should be ordered with the powerful 368-hp twin-turbo V-6. Ordering the GT2 is the only way to obtain that powertrain. An all-wheel drive is an option, however, it replaces the Michelin Pilot Sport summer tires on the rear-drive Stinger with all-season tires. The peak speed is likewise lowered from 167 mph to 149 mph with all-wheel drive. Even though either of those speeds could land you in jail, the extra 18 mph might come in useful if you were to enter the Stinger on a track day on a circuit with a really long straight.

The V-6 delivers an exhilarating performance that raises our blood pressure. The eight-speed automatic transmission that both engines are mated to, in our opinion, offers quick shifts at the redline while remaining quiet when left to shift on its own.
The paddle shifters could have reacted to driver inputs more rapidly, though. But the V-6-powered Stinger GT does not let down drivers who are only concerned with straight-line speed. During our track tests, the Stinger GT2 demonstrated its mastery of straight-line speed by reaching 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.
It handles beautifully under typical driving circumstances, but when pushed to the limit, it loses the composure of its more seasoned rivals. Similarly, during our full-throttle acceleration and braking runs, we saw some rear suspension protests—a jarring side step when cornering hard on a bad road—as well as some fore-and-aft tilting.
Strong Brembo brakes that are standard on the GT2 enable quick stops by any measure and fit in well with this class of high-performance sedans. Without the Brembos, the Stinger is less impressive and has less grippy all-season tires.
Although the Stinger’s interior is attractive and well-designed, it lacks the materials and workmanship of the Audi A4 and BMW 3-series. The Kia, though, costs substantially less than those two German sedans. Contrarily, the Stinger offers a significantly more comfortable back seat than many vehicles in this price range, and its advantage in the room appears greater than its statistics suggest. Although there are no glaring flaws or omissions inside the Stinger, the overall design is less polished than what we’ve seen from renowned luxury manufacturers.
Although the Stinger’s declared boot volume would indicate that it had by far the most cargo space in its class, it only narrowly surpassed its rivals in our real-world cargo tests. We anticipated that the Stinger would do even better in our tests due to its big hatchback opening and long wheelbase. The fact that the front-door pockets are the smallest of the bunch is partially offset by the fact that it has a large center console for a car.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance:
The Stinger is offered two distinct turbocharged engines, a 368-hp twin-turbo 3.3-liter V-6, and a 300-hp 2.5-liter turbo-four. The V-6’s superb performance has our passionate hearts racing. An eight-speed automatic transmission is paired with both engines, and in our experience, it provides rapid shifts at the redline and is unobtrusive when left to shift on its own.
However, we wish the paddle shifters responded to driver inputs more quickly. Still, the V-6-powered Stinger GT does not let down those who are just focused on achieving high straight-line speeds. The all-wheel-drive Stinger GT2 has mastered straight-line speed; during our track testing, it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Although it behaves admirably in everyday driving situations, it couldn’t quite equal the poise of its more seasoned competitors when pushed to the limit.
When turning hard on a bumpy road, the rear suspension also made some protests, and our full-throttle accelerating and braking laps were accompanied by some fore-and-aft pitching. Strong Brembo brakes on the GT2 delivered rapid stops by any standard and blended in well with this group of high-performance sedans. The Stinger is less spectacular without the Brembos and when fitted with all-season tires provides less traction.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
With EPA ratings of 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the interstate, the rear-drive, four-cylinder Stinger has the best-predicted fuel economy. If all-wheel drive is used, the efficiency decreases marginally to 21 and 29 mpg, according to the EPA. Naturally, the more powerful V-6 engine is less fuel-efficient, getting 17 and 24 mpg on the highway and 18 and 25 mpg in the city, respectively, especially when equipped with all-wheel drive. The all-wheel-drive, V-6 vehicle we reviewed achieved 26 mpg in that test, even though we haven’t tested the new 2.5-liter turbo-four on our 75-mph highway route, which is a part of our rigorous testing procedure.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The Kia Stinger’s UVO infotainment system, which combines a practical tactile button layout with an 8.0- or 10.3-inch touchscreen, works well. A nine-speaker radio system and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard equipment. A 15-speaker Harman/Kardon radio system is available as an upgrade for audiophiles, and Kia also provides a number of other technological enhancements like a wireless smartphone charging pad and in-dash navigation.
