Shimoyama is home to the Lexus Driving Signature. 2021 IS marked the beginning of a new era of vehicles developed at Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama with a consistent Lexus Driving Signature. Since Lexus’s inception, the Chief Engineer’s vision and efforts have driven the tactile feel, behaviour, and execution of each model (CE).
Lexus Driving Signature is a key component of Lexus Next Chapter, representing a fundamental shift in our product development process and culture. The CE’s efforts are focused on elevating the vehicles to a new level of performance and handling developed by Lexus International President and Chief Branding Officer Koji Sato and Master Driver and Brand Holder Akio Toyoda. The ultimate goal is to introduce a new generation of Lexus vehicles with a shared brand identity that includes responsive and linear control, exceptional handling, grip, and confidence, and refined ride quality and quietness. At the Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama, these elements are realised through rigorous testing and evaluation.
Interior:
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/ SA) is intended to alert the driver via steering wheel vibrations or an audible alert if it detects an inadvertent lane departure at speeds greater than 32 miles per hour. It can also take minor corrective actions to keep the driver within the clearly marked lane. Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) is designed to provide a slight steering force to help steer to the centre of the lane to assist the driver with staying in the lane using visible lane markers or a preceding vehicle when DRCC is set and engaged.
LTA warns the driver visually, audibly, and by causing the steering wheel to vibrate. The lane recognition performance in the IS, which enables LTA, has been improved with improved recognition of line and road edge, lateral G performance, and improved control and stability after a lane change.
Intelligent High Beams, which detects preceding or approaching vehicles and automatically switches between high and low beam headlights, is another Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 feature. When data is available, Road Sign Assist (RSA) is designed to acquire specific road sign information using a camera and navigation maps and display it on the multi-information display (MID).
Lexus Safety System+ 2.5:
The Lexus Safety System+ 2.5, which adds a suite of key active safety features to 2023 IS 500, comes standard. The Pre-Collision System (PCS), which includes Frontal Collision Warning (FCW), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Pedestrian Detection, and Bicyclist Detection, has a lens camera and millimetre-wave radar element enhancement to increase response range.
By improving the radar and camera capabilities, the system can now detect not only the vehicle ahead but also a preceding bicyclist during the day and a preceding pedestrian during the day and in low-light conditions. At intersections, the system can recognise an oncoming vehicle when performing a left turn, or a pedestrian when performing left and right turns, and is designed to activate typical PCS functions if necessary. Emergency Steering Assist (ESA), which is designed to assist steering within the vehicle’s lane as cued by the driver, is another PCS function.
All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) is designed to perform vehicle-to-vehicle distance controls down to 0 mph and can resume from a stop when activated above 30 mph. DRCC also includes a feature for smoothly overtaking slower vehicles. When travelling behind a vehicle travelling slower than the preset speed, the system will provide an initial increase in acceleration in preparation for changing lanes; and, after the driver changes lanes, the vehicle will continue to accelerate until it reaches the original preset driving speed
