MG4 EV 2022 Review. The expectation that EVs will be less expensive than conventional automobiles by 2023 or 2024 has been dashed by chip scarcity and the current economic crisis. Mineral shortages have delayed the cost reduction to below $100 per kWh in batteries, which is thought to be necessary for price parity, and the $25,000 Tesla seems further away than it was. But more affordable EVs are on the way, and MG is one business bringing down costs. The MG4 EV, which the business recently debuted, establishes a new standard for electric value. At the UK launch event, I had a chance to test drive the MG4 EV extensively.

What is the MG4 EV?
The Vauxhall/Opel Corsa-e, Peugeot e-208, and DS3 E-Tense are a few more Stellantis group electric vehicles in the same class. The compact format continues to be quite popular and is the greatest option for a general-purpose automobile that is largely used in urban surroundings, despite the fact that SUVs are the largest sellers in the USA and have established a leading position in Europe as well.
A compact car would be the one to take the lead in terms of value, and the MG4 EV checks many of the right boxes to qualify as a legend in its field. This design, known as the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), will support future MG releases. With the batteries flat under the floor and a long wheelbase to maximise internal space while still providing balance and a low centre of gravity, it is a true “skateboard” system.
MG4 EV Models, Driving Dynamics, and Range:
Additionally, the MSP architecture supports a variety of battery and motor configurations. The first MG4 EV models to be released are the SE Standard Range and SE and Trophy Long Range, both of which have 64kWh batteries and 150kW (201hp) motors. The SE Standard Range model has a 51kWh battery. They are both 50:50 weight distributed rear-wheel-drive vehicles that are a blast to drive. Although they aren’t particularly fast by EV standards (7.7 seconds for the Standard Range and 7.9 seconds for the Long Range), the handling is excellent, and the EV torque makes overtaking manoeuvres quite simple.
The two battery sizes provide respectable ranges. The SE Long Range can go 281 miles, while the Standard Range can travel up to 218 miles (WLTP rating; EPA not yet released). This is reduced to 270 miles in the Trophy variant. It’s interesting to note that the Standard Range vehicle utilises the same Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery as the cheapest Model 3 Tesla made in China. You will be able to utilise this chemistry’s complete battery range better because it is more tolerant of 100% charging. The Long Range uses NMC chemistry which is more commonplace.
Coming Soon are Dual motors and a Longer-range MG4 EV:
Two additional drivetrain configurations are also promised by MG in the future. One will have a 77kWh battery with a 329-mile range, outperforming vehicles from Kia and Hyundai, and competing with the ID.3 Tour. The most thrilling model is a dual-motor variant with 330kW motors (nearly 440hp), which MG claims will enable it to reach 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. Given how entertaining the MG4 EV is in its single-motor configuration, all-wheel drive may very well turn it into a pocket performance classic, especially if MG can do it for less than £40,000 ($48,000). This vehicle will have a 64 kWh battery and a 250-mile range.
Inside and externally, previous MG automobiles had a fairly dated appearance. With a significantly more contemporary exterior, the MG4 EV alters that. It almost has a sexual vibe. Although it appears to be one of the reasons why the Trophy version has a little less range than the SE, the front is aggressive and the rear is sharp and angular, especially with the additional spoiler.

The inside has also been updated. Although some of the materials utilised for the interior trim don’t seem to be of high quality, the overall design is clean and modern. The previous MGs’ dials have been replaced with a big 10.25-inch infotainment screen, which is positioned higher up. The instrumentation also features a 7-inch digital display.
This vehicle offers plenty of space for the driver and passengers due to its extended wheelbase. Even if you’re six feet tall, adults can sit in the back with enough head and knee room. Longer excursions can be taken in comfortable enough seats. Only the Trophy trim offers electronic seat adjustment, and it only applies to the driver’s seat. Similarly, there is no lumbar adjustability.
Although the standard capacity (363 litres, or around 13 cubic feet), is more than most subcompacts but less than the VW ID.3 or Cupra Born, the cargo space is only average. When the rear seats are folded down, there is also more space available than in most subcompacts (1,177 litres, or around 42 cubic feet), but once less than in Volkswagen Group rivals. However, the back cargo area is flat with the seats folded down and has no lip, making it highly useful.
However, there is still room for improvement in terms of infotainment. With the MG4 EV, MG also made significant changes to the infotainment and controls, although I believe the business can still do better in this area. There is practically just a dial for the drive controls, an electronic parking brake, and a few buttons for de-misting the front and rear windows in this car because of MG’s focus on simplicity. A few buttons, as well as the customary indicator and wiper stalks, are also located on the steering wheel.
Cheapest EV Ever Made?
The MG4 EV’s affordability is, however, its most crucial attribute. I had thought that the price of this automobile would be around £25,000 ($30,000), but MG hasn’t quite been able to do so. The SE Trophy costs £31,495 ($37,500), the SE Long Range costs £28,495 ($34,000), and the SE Standard Range costs £25,995 ($31,000). These costs put it far behind almost all rivals, notably the Renault Zoe, Nissan Leaf, all Stellantis vehicles (Vauxhall/Opel, Peugeot), and Volkswagen Group automobiles. Even the superb EVs from Kia and Hyundai appear pricey in contrast.
You’ll see that I never directly compared Tesla to anything else in my piece, nor did I refer to the MG4 EV as a “Tesla killer.” That’s incorrect, as Musk’s business has not yet released anything in this category. Perhaps in the future, but for the time being, Elon will no doubt be pleased to see the MG4 EV’s arrival reduce the cost of owning an electric vehicle. The other manufacturers need to worry. Although it isn’t flawless, the MG4 EV is still extremely good. It has a fantastic range, is convenient, and is fun to drive. The best part is that it offers great value, making EVs slightly more accessible to everyone.
