The 2022 Golf GTI is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Despite having 13 more horsepower and 15 more pound-feet of torque than the previous model, power is still sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission as standard or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as an option.
We tested a GTI equipped with an automatic transmission, which provided smooth shifts and allowed the hatch to reach 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, which is 0.7 seconds faster than a previous-generation Rabbit equipped with an automatic transmission. The new GTI is not only faster in the straight, but it also has more entertainment value thanks to its electronically controlled limited-slip differential and brake-based torque vectoring.
Interior:
The interior of the Golf GTI is more contemporary than before, with some nods to the past. The dashboard’s two largest displays are a 10.3-inch gauge cluster and a 10.0-inch touchscreen with a piano-black bezel. The GTI’s three-spoke steering wheel has touch-sensitive buttons and a sharply curved rim.
Its bolstered front seats have distinctive plaid inserts on the top and bottom cushions, as well as red trim around the outside edges. Unfortunately, unlike the previous version’s high-quality surroundings, the new interior is marred by some chintzy finishes. A lower cowl improves visibility, but we prefer a straightforward set of analogue gauges to the overly adjustable digital layout.
